Audi have given a clear indication they have the car to beat in the season opener of the newly founded Le Mans Endurance Series (LMES): Johnny Herbert, driving for Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx, qualified the Audi R8 on pole position for tomorrow’s race at Monza. He set the fastest time in the second of the two 45 minute sessions of qualifying on Saturday.

Quotes after qualifying at Monza

Rinaldo Capello (Audi Sport Team Goh Audi R8 #5): “I didn’t drive in the afternoon session. This morning I had some bad luck because in my first outing there was some oil on the track and during my second try the session was interrupted due to a red flag. Our R8 is well prepared for the long race tomorrow.”
Tom Kristensen (Audi Sport Team Goh Audi R8 #5): “I only had very little time on the track today. So therefore I’m of course happy with the time I did. Actually, I’m here at Monza to support my team mates and to be together with the team to prepare for the Le Mans 24 Hour race.”
Kazumichi Goh (Head of Audi Sport Japan Team Goh): “Today everything went in the right direction. We have sorted out all small problems experienced during the sessions yesterday and can now focus our concentration on the race. I’m sure we will see a thrilling fight against the other two Audi cars and of course the Zytek.”
Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “I’m satisfied with the three Audi R8 sports cars. Especially the Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx is showing a good perfomance. And with the third row on the grid, the Audi Sport Japan Team Goh is also starting the race from a promising position. As we expected, the competition is very high here at Monza and I’m sure it will be exactly the same during the race tomorrow. But over the distance and with the advantage of the lower fuel consumption of our FSI engines we should have a good chance for a win at the season opener.”
